John Philip Sousa: Patriotism, Power, and Race (MITA Lesson)

We celebrate and examine the life and music of the March King, John Philip Sousa. Sousa lived at a time of unprecedented changes in American life, from the Civil War to the Nineteenth Amendment that gave women the right to vote. His achievements and attitudes reflect many of the social and cultural issues with which America is still engaged today.

MITA Lessons are live webinars on wide-ranging musical topics that we record and publish. See more MITA Lessons here.
